What is a Reusable Menstrual Pad?

by Gracie B - Your Moon Time Ambassador on October 24, 2018

Women all around the world are faced with the same monthly conundrum their mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers faced: how do I best deal with my period?

There are hundreds of products on the market ready to meet your needs every month, but if you are like me and happen to be wary of single use plastics and want something free of unnecessary chemicals, regular pads might not be for you.

That’s where reusable menstrual pads come in.

A reusable menstrual pad is very similar to its single-use counterpart, except it’s typically made out of cotton or bamboo and can be thrown in the washing machine instead of the trash after use. Made using organic, sustainable materials that are safe for our bodies, these pads are highly absorbent, meaning you don’t have to sacrifice utility in favor of eco-friendliness. Sturdy snaps take the place of the sticky wings to keep the pads in place all day and night.

When you’re out and about and need to change, simply grab a “wet bag” to store the soiled pad until you’re home and able to rinse it.

Washing your reusable pads couldn’t be easier—all you need to do is wash with like colors as normal on cold or warm settings (avoid hot water, which can set stains).  Many women find it helps to soak soiled pads in cold water before washing.

The bottom line

What it comes down to is this: reusable pads are a fantastic option for women and girls that like to save money, keep plastic out of landfills, reduce their bodies’ exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, and want to feel good doing it.
