Don't Let Your Period Crash the Costume Party

by Lynn Evans on October 16, 2026

Nothing tests the structural integrity of a costume quite like realizing, three hours into a Halloween party, that your period arrived uninvited and your costume was not built with this contingency in mind. Bodysuits, I am looking directly at you.

A Very Real Halloween Problem

Between candy corn, questionable weather, and a packed October calendar of parties, parades, and pumpkin patches, tracking your cycle can slip pretty far down the priority list. And then Halloween weekend arrives and you're doing math in a bathroom stall trying to figure out how a one-piece skeleton suit is supposed to work right now.

I've been there. Specifically, I've been there in a full mermaid costume that took twenty minutes to get into. We do not need to relive it.

The Fix: Plan for It Like You Plan for Candy

This is genuinely one of my favorite uses for period underwear, because it removes an entire category of costume-planning stress. No pads shifting around under a fitted costume, no worrying about a visible line under something stretchy, and definitely no emergency bathroom origami trying to change products in a porta-potty at an outdoor event.

Our Lyra Bamboo Menstrual Underwear works great as an all-day base layer under costumes, whether you're dealing with your actual period or just want backup security for a long night out. Soft, breathable, and it holds up through a full night of dancing, trick-or-treat walking, or standing in line for the good pumpkin patch photo op.

A Costume-Planning Checklist

●      Check your cycle tracker before you commit to a costume that's hard to get out of quickly.

●      Layer period underwear under costumes rather than relying on pads that can shift with movement.

●      Pack a small emergency kit in your bag regardless — better to have it and not need it.

●      If you're handing out candy at home instead, treat yourself to the cozy sweatpants version of this whole conversation. No judgment, only respect.

The Takeaway

Halloween should be about bad puns, good candy, and costumes that are slightly too ambitious for how many stairs your venue has. Your period showing up shouldn't be the plot twist of the night. Plan ahead, wear the mermaid tail with confidence, and enjoy the whole spooky season.
