Are Tampons Toxic?

Most of us don’t care about what we expose our bodies to. I, too, was like that. I was oblivious to the fact that almost everything around me was harmful in one way or another. I never had the foresight to seek information, but that changed when I decided to go green and started using natural period products.

With the health of the environment on my mind, I slowly realized that the change starts with me and that’s when I decided to dig deeper. All I had to do was search the internet and soon I hit the mother lode.

We all have had peace of mind when it comes to sanitary products because they have been approved by the FDA. Over 41 million women use them in the US alone. I remember the first time I got my period and how easy tampons made everything for me. But  a few years ago, I finally came to the conclusion that my go-to choice was actually harmful for me.

Are Tampons Toxic?

I have pondered over this question many times and after considerable research, I finally opted for eco-friendly period products. The cotton used to make tampons is treated with powerful herbicides that are dangerous for humans. Cotton tampons may contain glyphosate— a common chemical that is suspected of being a cancer-causing agent. We repeatedly use tampons without realizing that this carcinogenic element may be causing harm to our bodies.

The mucous membrane of the vagina is highly absorbent and that’s the reason behind the numerous cases of toxic shock syndrome. In the United States alone, 1-5 cases in every 100,000 women are found. Any pesticides and chlorine that are present in the cotton tampons are likely to be absorbed by the vagina, and that’s how the toxins enter your bloodstream.

Tampons are toxic, not only for you but also for the environment. Not even the oceans are safe from this toxic waste. So if you are conscious about the environment as much as your own health, you know what the next step is for you.

Parting Thought

Now that you know about the toxic nature of tampons, it is better if you start opting for eco-friendly period products such as USA reusable menstrual cups. I made the switch, and it is one of the best decisions of my life. I have made the right choice. Will you?
